SUMMER FUN Summer entertaining is so much fun! Out on the patio or deck, BBQ and soda pops in the sun. Eventually though the party will head inside. Are you ready? Here are some must haves for when the party moves inside. First thing is some extra counter space for drinks, chips, and more. A great rolling cart, butcher block, or counter height cabinet is perfect for this. Next, you need seating. It can be a few spare chairs, a bigger sofa, or some counter/ bar stools. If you go for stools make sure you know the height you need, there are many heights available. And last, but not least, somewhere for guests to sleep if they are not safe to drive home. Many modern pull out sofas are quite comfortable. Gone are the days of a thin mattress and and back breaking bar in the middle. Flip out chairs are another good option. A lowish comfy chair that flips open to a single bed size sleeping surface. So enjoy your summer, and have fun! Glenn AUGUST 14, 2022
IS IT SOLID TEAK? You have probably seen many pieces of teak furniture advertised as "solid" teak. While there is solid teak furniture, most are veneer. That's right, veneer. Between two layers of teak veneer you will find a chunky type of particle board, or on earlier pieces plywood. To finish off this illusion the edges are also veneered. Some teak furniture, like dining tables, will have a solid edging around them to give the appearance of solid wood and also to add an edge shape that is more difficult for veneer. So, when shopping for teak, assume it is veneer until you can tell different. Glenn AUGUST 1, 2022
THE "RULE OF THREE" Have you heard of the "Rule of Three" when it comes to interior design? This basic of decorating is an ode to how we see things. Our minds enjoy the challenge of looking at an odd number of items, so a trio becomes more than just decorative, it becomes engaging. A pair of lamps at each end of a sideboard may appeal also, but does not stop the eye like a trifecta of candlesticks at one end. Try it out at home, or even check out store displays. Many stores hire display experts, and they have great ideas working with odd numbers. Whatever you decide, have fun with it. Rules are, of course, made to be broken too! Glenn |

WHEN IN ROME You know it is said "When in Rome, do as the Romans do." Well, how about noooo! Your home, your taste. It can be easy to follow what is popular and in "style," but at what cost? The furniture you choose reflects your individuality. Colour, style, and form are completely up to you. Some things are important to remember though. The furniture you choose will need to fit your physical area, as well as your budget. Whether purchasing new or second hand try to keep the size of your space in mind. Not just the space it takes up, but also the appearance in your space. Large stores can make furniture seem small until you get it home, so measuring ahead is a safe bet. Function is the obvious one. It's easy to get carried away with all of the fabulous furniture out there, but try to keep on track. Shopping for a table and coming home with a sofa may not be the best! Have fun and happy shopping. Glenn APRIL 20, 2022
SOME DESIGN FUN BASICS. Mention interior design and most people panic. Colours, textures, flow, and more can become overwhelming. Lets take it back to basics. First rule, should be to decorate with what you like. Spending money on things you are told you should like is never a good idea. You have to look at it every day, make sure it makes you happy! Second rule, many colours can go together. It's not like you are putting all of you furniture, lamps, and art in one room together. Different colours in different rooms is so much fun. Whether you design around a wall colour, flooring, or a statement piece of furniture, remember that is just one room in your home. Have fun with it! Third rule, trendy is just trendy. If you don't mind changing things out every few years buying the newest trends is awesome. But if you want to establish a look you are keeping for many years trust you own taste. In the long run you will save a lot of money and enjoy you home more. Well, there you have my opinion on interior design. Hope it helps and enjoy whatever path you follow. Glenn |
